Operational enhancements
Qimage v2003.260 (08/12/03):
New Features:
Print-to-file enhancement: v2003.260 offers the ability to auto-name printed pages based on the first image on each page. This enhancement allows users to set up a page size/resolution and print one image per page (for example), keeping the file names of the images intact for the saved pages. To avoid getting printed pages confused with originals, Qimage uses a {Q-P} prefix on auto-named pages but keeps the rest of the file name intact so that prints can be easily identified after being printed by online printing services.
Batch filter: Enhanced the up/down controls on the batch filter window so that values can be seen as they change when the up/down arrows are held with the mouse.
Software update: Improved the Qimage software update function on the "Help", "About Qimage" window so that old installation files are removed prior to starting a new installation to improve reliability of the update procedure.
Fixes:
Optimal placement fix: Fixed a minor issue with "Optimal" and "Optimal/Spaced" placement methods that was causing initial print orientation to change unnecessarily.
Slide show: Fixed an image distortion problem when using "Rotate Left" and "Rotate Right" in the windowed slide show.
Page editor: Fixed a problem with "Img. Info" on the page editor screen: checking/unchecking "Img. Info" was not always updating print size appropriately from the page editor.

Qimage Version 2003.250 News
Giving you the features you need
Qimage v2003.250 (07/30/03):
New Features:
Embedding ICC profiles in JPEG's: v2003.250 now supports embedding of profiles into saved/converted JPEG's as well as TIFF's. Qimage will now automatically tag all your TIFF/JPEG images with the proper profile, even when creating email/web copies of images.
Carrying EXIF data from originals to copies: v2003.250 now carries EXIF data over to your converted/saved images when doing JPEG --> JPEG saves. In other words, if both your original and the saved/filtered image are in JPEG format, Qimage will carry all EXIF (camera info) data from the original to the saved/edited image so that info like shutter speed, aperture, and other parameters are not lost on the converted/edited JPEG. Note that EXIF carry-over is currently limited to JPEG --> JPEG saves where both the original and the saved images are in JPEG format, however, we intend to expand this capability to include TIFF and raw CCD images in the future.
"Create email/web copies" improvement: The "Create email/web copies" function has been improved to include a user-selectable output folder as well as a selection for JPEG quality.
Fixes:
Cutout fix: Fixed a problem that was causing cutouts and frames to distort/stretch images under some conditions.
Batch filter preview: Fixed an issue with the batch filter preview that was causing it to pop up with a blank (or old) image after performing certain operations.
Batch filter "Save As" function: Fixed a bug that was causing the resolution parameters on the "File", "Save As" function in the batch filter to appear with incorrect values.
Display full screen: Fixed a problem that was causing the "Display Full Screen" (space bar) function to display images but not profile them with the "Mntr ICC" profile.

Qimage Version 2003.240 News
Making Qimage easier to use through
smoother operation
Qimage v2003.240 (07/24/03):
New Features:
Ability to handle much larger images: v2003.240 will succeed in loading, converting, viewing, and printing images up to 32,768 x 32,768 pixels where old versions may have failed in some cases. While older versions had about a 10,000 x 10,000 pixel limit for processing JPEG images for example, v2003.240 can easily handle any image format up to 32,768 pixels on either/both axes, allowing better handling of panoramas, collages, and other large images (provided your system's RAM+virtual memory can handle the operations).
Better error checking: v2003.240 is able to detect and work around a greater range of problems related to image corruption, reducing the likelihood of errors/crashes when you enter folders that contain corrupted/unreadable images as well as images beyond the 32,768 x 32,768 pixel limit.
Smoother batch filter operation: Operation of the preview window is much faster and smoother, allowing you to better utilize the "View", "Auto Preview" option in the batch filter without slowing you down.
Saturation filter: Improved saturation filter operations by auto-selecting the "lock all channels" checkbox when a filtered image is opened based on whether or not all 6 saturation channels are equal.
Save/load printer setup: The save/load printer setup feature has been modified to include the ICC profile rendering intent to ensure the proper intent is used with your profile.
New troubleshooting help section: Updated and reformatted the "Help", "Contents", "Troubleshooting" section of the help (also available online) to assist users in quickly finding solutions to the most common questions and problems related to Qimage operation.
Fixes:
Border/print sizing issue: Fixed a problem that was causing prints to change to a much smaller size when adding a print border to prints that are auto-rotated on the page.
Cutout problem: Fixed an issue that resulted in cutouts being "double stamped" or stamped in the wrong location when adding a cutout to a cropped image in the batch filter.
Version 2003.24x Revision History
| Version | Released | Priority | Description |
| v2003.241 | 07/25/03 | High | v2003.241 eliminates "JPEG error #36" when saving JPG files that are between 1.0 and 2.0 MB in size. This version also improves the "Page", "Margins" feature by allowing you to specify margins relative to paper in portrait orientation. Since margins are now specified for left, right, top, bottom based on how the paper feeds into the printer (regardless of whether you have set portrait/landscape), margins no longer change arbitrarily when you rotate your page from portrait to landscape or vice versa. The new method of specifying margins allows you to use the "Center on Physical Page" option without worrying about whether your print driver is in portrait or landscape mode; images will be centered regardless of your paper orientation. |
| v2003.242 | 07/26/03 | Med | v2003.242 eliminates a "TProgressBar property out of range" error when printing extremely large photos or jobs with a large number of smaller photos. |

Qimage Version 2003.200 News
New version. New interpolation. New
features. Better performance!
Qimage v2003.200 (02/07/03):
New Software Name/Version Convention:
Some of our veteran users may have noticed that we have changed the name of our software from "Qimage Pro" to simply "Qimage", and have also changed the version numbering scheme. We have made these changes mainly to serve our users better by providing a less confusing nomenclature. The product is known and referred to as "Qimage" by most people on Internet message boards and UseNet groups, and removal of the "Pro" adjective should eliminate questions about whether we offer both "regular" and "pro" editions of the software; there has always been only one edition. In addition, we have decided to simply include the year in the version number rather than restarting version numbers at the beginning of each year. This will eliminate issues with users understanding that Qimage 2003 v1.0 is a later version than Qimage 2002 v2.0, etc. Other than a new naming/numbering convention, there is nothing inherently "different" about Qimage.
New Features:
New "vector" interpolation: In addition to the existing Lanczos, bicubic, and other methods, Qimage 2003.200 adds a new interpolation called "vector" interpolation. Vector interpolation is an advanced resampling method that, in general, produces better results than Lanczos interpolation, rendering images with less noise and artifacts, and producing smoother edges. Skeptical? Check out this sample. Vector interpolation is the new default for print interpolation and (like the other existing interpolation methods) can also be used to resample images. In addition to providing extremely high quality interpolation results, the new vector method runs slightly faster than Lanczos!
Interpolation performance: All interpolation operations in Qimage (excluding raw CCD image interpolation) have been optimized further and are now 20% faster. This means that even when using the new vector interpolation, both printing and upsampling operations will be 20% faster!
Save and restore printer setup: Use "File", "Save Printer Setup" or "File", "Load Printer Setup" to save all print driver settings and reload them at any time. Do you have specific settings for certain papers that you like to use? No problem. Set your print driver properties once, save them, and load them at any time.
Info stamp improvement: Improved the "info stamp" filter so that image information always appears inside prints, even when prints are auto-cropped.
Show file name in slide show: Added the ability to display the file name on images when using the slide show in full screen mode. This feature is helpful to professionals using the auto-advance Qimage slide show at events.
Batch filter image scaling: Improved the quality of the image displayed in the small preview window in the batch filter so that jagged edges are eliminated.
Support for JPE file extension:Qimage will now recognize files with the .JPE extension (used by some Minolta software) as valid JPEG format images.
Print-to-file enhancement:A new selection on the print-to-file page properties dialog allows users to select whether printed files are intended for monitor/web or for an external printer. Selecting "monitor/web" automatically turns off smart sharpening and sets the output profile to sRGB. Selecting "printer" returns smart sharpening and "Printer ICC" to previous settings.
Fixes:
Fixed a multi-threading issue that caused the batch filter to perform erratically while the background thumbnail builder was running.
Corrected a problem that was causing some Internet-downloaded BMP files to display almost all black.
When trouble is encountered in an image while printing, Qimage will now abort the printing process and display an error, eliminating the possibility of "Image Read Error" printing and wasting paper.
Fixed a problem related to specifying border sizes in metric mode.
Fixed an issue that was causing the "resample" function under "File", "Save As" from the batch filter to produce different results than a resample via "Convert Images".
Fixed a bug that was causing some prints to revert to a previous size when using Ctrl-R and Ctrl-S from the page editor in freehand placement mode.

Qimage 2003 Version 1.1 News
More powerful features and smoother
operation!
Qimage 2003, v1.1 (11/19/02):
New Features:
Increasing the power of cutouts: Use cutouts for creating copyright notices, blending effects, and much more. The new cutout filter not only has expanded functionality such as variable transparency, it also completely eliminates "jaggies" caused by stretching cutouts to fit images of different aspect ratios. Below are some examples of the power of QP 2003 cutouts. Note that if you have created your own cutouts for previous versions, you may need to modify them slightly to work with the new version since there are now more colors that are considered "translucent". See the help under "Contents", "Listing of Major Functions", "Cutouts" for specific information on the changes to cutouts and how to build your own cutouts.
Original:

Qimage 2002 ("Oval" cutout):

Qimage 2003 ("Faded Oval"
cutout):

Qimage 2003 (Translucent "Copyright"
sample):

Thumbnail operations: Selecting and scrolling through thumbnails is now faster and smoother due to improvements in thumbnail highlighting and improvements in the background thumbnail builder. v1.1 also corrects "sluggish" operation when trying to select thumbnails while the background thumbnail builder is operating.
Selective filter deletion: The window that allows deletion of specific filters from a range of images has been modified so that it now shows which filters are active for the selected set of images.
New 12-up contact sheet: v1.1 includes a 12-up contact sheet as well as the older 25-up contact sheet.
Fixes:
Fixed an issue related to the print border disappearing after loading a session and selecting/changing print size of an existing print.
Fixed an issue where the print sizes listed in the queue were not always updating after certain operations (like changing page orientation, changing image placement, etc.)
Version 1.1 Revision History
| Version | Released | Priority* | Description |
| v1.11 | 11/20/02 | Med | v1.11 includes the following:
|
| v1.12 | 11/21/02 | Low | v1.12 includes the following:
|
| v1.13 | 11/22/02 | Low | v1.13 includes the following:
|
| v1.14 | 11/23/02 | Low | v1.14 fixes a problem with the "Flash Card Copy/Move" window causing error messages under some conditions. |
| v1.15 | 11/25/02 | Med | v1.15 has an improved "smart sharpening" algorithm that makes printed sharpness at High, Med, and Low interpolation levels consistent with sharpening at the "Max" interpolation level. Since the new smart sharpening algorithm only affects High, Med, and Low interpolation levels, there will be no difference in your prints if you always use the "Max" interpolation level. v1.15 also improves performance of the "Flash Card Copy/Move" feature by offering better support for flash card readers that operate as "dual" drives. |
| v1.16 | 12/01/02 | Low | v1.16 contains an update to the text on the "Registration" window. No changes were made to underlying code. |
| v1.17 | 12/13/02 | Med | v1.17 uses improved logic to
track user selections in the "Prints" group
such as changes to cropping, print size, border size, and
border color, in order to better predict the intended
workflow. Previous versions maintained a separate set of
parameters for each work area (thumbnail and print
preview work area). While simple in concept, separating
parameter changes based on work area often caused
confusion. For example, a user may have just changed the
auto-crop from off to on for some existing prints only to
find that the crop button "popped back up" when
they moved back to the thumbnail work area. v1.17
eliminates this confusion by making the last change (to
print size, print orientation, auto-crop, and borders)
"stick" so that the last change is remembered
regardless of which work area is in use. In other words,
as an example, if the crop button is changed from off to
on for an existing print, it will remain on for the next
thumbs added to the queue. This change has an added benefit in that users can select a print on the page and have the "parameters" of that print carry over to the next thumbnails added to the queue. For example, if a page contains images with both red and green borders, simply selecting a print that has a red border will ensure that the next images added to the queue will contain red borders of the indicated size. |
| v1.18 | 12/17/02 | Low | v1.18 improves the print-to-file function so that the resolution (PPI) identified under the page setup is properly recorded in all page images. This ensures that images of printed pages are the proper default size when opened in photo editing programs, thereby eliminating confusion when delivering images to off site printing services. The resolution information is recorded in all page images saved in either the JPEG or TIFF image format (the BMP format does not support the resolution parameter). |
| v1.19 | 12/30/02 | High | v1.19 includes the following:

Qimage 2003 Version 1.0 News
A major upgrade gives Qimage a new face
with new features!
Qimage 2003, v1.0 (11/04/02):
New Features:
New user interface: The user interface controlling the main window of Qimage has been completely redesigned to provide faster and simpler access to many functions. Here are just a few examples of the improvements to the UI:
Quick sizes always open and ready to use: Nine of the most common print sizes plus custom sizes are available at all times and can be redefined by the user. Simple one click actions control the size and fitting of both new prints being added and existing prints on the page.
Main window work areas: The main window is now divided into two major work areas: the thumbnail work area and the preview page work area. When print sizes and fitting are accessed, these functions affect the currently selected work area (identified by a blue border), allowing a single set of controls to perform multiple actions.
Tool buttons: More logical layout of tool buttons and menu functions.
Less steps: Perform the same actions as previous versions using fewer steps in many cases. For example, here is a comparison of the steps required to change the size of an existing print from 4x6 to 3x2:
Qimage 2002 v2.48:
Highlight the selected print.
Right click on the preview page.
Select "New Print Size".
Select "Quick Size".
Double click the "3x2" size.
Qimage 2003 v1.0:
Highlight the selected print.
Click the 3x2 size button.
New functionality: We couldn't give Qimage a facelift without adding new functionality as well. Below are some of the new features available in Qimage 2003 v1.0:
Optimal image placement: The old "Optimize" image placement has been replaced by a new method that we renamed "Optimal" placement. The first time you use Qimage 2003, it will switch to optimal print placement mode by default. This mode is designed to minimize paper use by filling gaps in an optimal fashion. While previous versions would not always optimize space (depending on the layout), Qimage 2003 will make better use of your expensive photo paper by filling gaps that older versions couldn't find. Coupled with the new "Sort Prints" feature (see below), this option makes the most of your paper and simplifies cutting of prints from the page. While this option is designed for users who ultimately wish to cut the photos from the page, older options such as "Center" or "Compact" placement can still be used to give you more control if you are creating album pages.
Sort prints: Qimage always maintains print order and will not move prints from page to page unless "Sort Prints" is used. The "Sort Prints" option sorts prints by size (largest to smallest) and also gives Qimage permission to move prints (change the order they appear on the page) to fill gaps when using the "Optimal" placement mode. This feature serves two purposes: it arranges prints such that cutting is much easier and also arranges prints in an order that better utilizes space on the paper.
Borders: The new border option allows you to define a border or "frame" around your prints. Simply enter the size of the border and an even border is created around the print. For example, if you choose a blue border of .25 inches on a 4x6 print, you'll get a 4x6 print with a .25 inch blue border. When using a white border, you can also check "Mark edges" at the bottom of the window so you will know where to cut.
Create email/web size images: After adding images to the queue/document, you can click the "Create email/web size copies" function to create JPEG copies of the images in the queue. The default size of these copies will be 640 x 480, however, you can use any size you like. Images are stored in the same folder as the originals and will have a {Q-E} prefix. You can then simply browse to that folder and attach the {Q-E} copy to your email using your email software. Note that in a future version, we will "connect" Qimage to your email client so that you can simply choose "Email a copy of this image".
Quick access to common filters: Simply multi-select thumbnails or prints and then right click and select "Apply Predefined Filters". Example: Select a thumbnail, right click and select "Apply Predefined Filter" and open "Rotate 90 Clockwise". Then repeat and select "Black and White". The result is a black and white photo rotated 90 degrees.
New custom size options: Use the "Custom" size button to select from a number of convenient sizing options: specific size, full page, by number, poster size, original size, etc.
New "Page Sets" option: After clicking the "Custom" button, click "Page Set" to load a page of templates. This option can be used to create packages of prints. Some common packages are available that include a variety of sizes, but you can also create your own. See the help under "Learn by Example" for details.
