Making an efficient interface easier to
use
Qimage v2004.330 (08/02/04):
New Features:
Interface improvements: v2004.330 marks completion of the majority of changes planned for the Qimage main interface. If you have been following the latest updates in the previous section and you already have the previous v2004.327 version, this version will only constitute a small change for you: an improvement in the way the thumbnail preview window (accessed via the +P button) is sized and handled. Since v2004.330 is the culmination of numerous incremental improvements that were designed to improve the main interface, we've broken v2004.330 out from the pack of minor revisions below as a new Qimage milestone. As you can see from the revision list in the previous section, improvements to the interface are too numerous to list, so if you haven't been following the latest revisions, please check it out.
Version 2004.33x Revision History
| Version | Released | Priority | Description |
| v2004.331 | 08/02/04 | Low | v2004.331 simply eliminates a false "Qimage is now unlocked" message after clicking the "Ignore and Continue" button for registered users with outdated unlock codes. There is no need to upgrade from v2004.330 to v2004.331 since the erroneous message will not appear once you enter a new/valid unlock code. This update is provided simply to eliminate any confusion caused by the message. |
| v2004.332 | 08/03/04 | Low | v2004.332 displays the approximate time remaining to complete a print job on the "Print Processing" panel after starting the job. Note that times are approximate and like most time remaining estimates may be less accurate for the first few seconds and may fluctuate a bit due to changes in spool speed, driver page finalization time, etc. This version also fixes an issue that was causing floating text to get linked to a different print when using "auto align to other labels". |
| v2004.333 | 08/03/04 | Low | v2004.333 corrects a bug that was causing the horizontal splitter under the thumbnails on the main window to jump above the thumbnails and be rendered inoperable under some conditions (such as after dragging the main window to near zero size and releasing). |
| v2004.334 | 08/10/04 | Low | v2004.334 corrects a bug that was causing saved sessions to sometimes skip template cells when the session was reloaded. This version also prevents the JPG quality parameter on the print-to-file window from being blanked out, causing pages to be saved with minimum (zero) JPG quality. |
| v2004.335 | 08/11/04 | Low | v2004.335 includes the
following:
|
| v2004.336 | 08/11/04 | Low | v2004.336 fixes a cosmetic bug where the on screen "Mntr ICC" doesn't update immediately when you choose to synchronize Qimage with the Windows monitor profile. |
| v2004.337 | 08/13/04 | Low | v2004.337 includes the
following:
|
| v2004.338 | 08/24/04 | Low | v2004.338 includes the
following:
|
| v2004.339 | 09/08/04 | Low | v2004.339 eliminates errors/problems caused by Qimage trying to read raw files from unsupported cameras, displaying an "unsupported" message when unsupported raw files are encountered. |
| v2004.340 | 09/10/04 | Low | v2004.340 adds an "OK to use special characters in file names" option to the "print to file" dialog. Unchecking this option will eliminate brackets { } and parentheses ( ) in file names for off site/online printing services that do not accept files named with special characters. |
| v2004.341 | 09/17/04 | Med | v2004.341 fixes a bug that was preventing Nikon D100 NEF images from displaying, reporting them as an "unsupported raw format". This version also activates the tool tips for buttons on the cropping tool in the page editor window. |
| v2004.342 | 11/02/04 | Low | v2004.342 fixes a bug that was causing print-to-file, convert, and other functions to save files with the wrong folder and file name if any folder in the selected path had a "." character in the folder name. As an example, if you were converting/saving a file named "c:\my pictures\myurl.com\test.tif" the file would be saved as "c:\my pictures\myurl.tif". |
| v2004.343 | 11/11/04 | Low | v2004.343 fixes a problem that was causing errors such as "image read error" when opening images that were missing a file date/time stamp or had an invalid file date/time stamp. It appears that this problem has arisen recently due to the file date/time stamp being stripped from some files after updating to XP SP2 or when saving files with certain (older) software while running under XP SP2. |
Qimage Version 2004.300 News
Take full control of any print, any page,
any time!
Qimage v2004.300 (06/15/04):
New Features:
Freehand by page: Take full control of the placement of images on any page at any time by just clicking and dragging your prints on the page. Unlike old versions which required switching the entire document to "Freehand" placement mode, v2004.300 allows freehand placement on a page-by-page basis, allowing you to fine tune individual pages while leaving the rest of the document in an auto-placement mode such as center, optimal, etc. Simply use the automatic placement method of your choice and click/drag at will. A small "F" button at the upper/right corner of the page shows you which pages are in freehand placement mode and allows you to control freehand/automatic placement for that page with just a click of the mouse. Be sure to check the "Listing of Major Functions", "Freehand" section of the help for more info.
Print rotation: Take full control over the orientation of your prints by highlighting prints and clicking the "Rotate Left" or "Rotate Right" buttons which replace the old portrait/landscape buttons. You can even right click and select a rotation with respect to the thumbnail (original image), such as selecting a print and rotating to 180 degrees (thumbnail upside down). Manual rotations "stick" until you change them or set the rotation back to "automatic". Prints that have been manually rotated show with a small rotation symbol at the upper right corner of the print on the preview page. Check the "Listing of Major Functions", "Print Rotation" section of the help for more info.
Click/drag on the preview page: You can now click and drag to move/size images directly on the small preview page on the main window. The full page editor is still available for high precision adjustments, placement at specific locations, and print cropping should you need it.
New nudge feature: Go to the full page editor and highlight a print. Hold the Ctrl key while pressing the left/right/up/down arrows on the keyboard to nudge the current print up against the next logical edge on the page: either the edge of another print or the edge of the page. This allows quick and easy alignment to other prints or the edge of the page.
Fixes:
Some minor bugs from v2004.211 were fixed along the way, most of which were cosmetic or related to certain window areas not updating or showing the latest information/status. The most significant issue was a fix where the page editor was not utilizing the monitor profile when "All Images" or "HQ Preview" was selected.

|
| v2004.324 | 07/30/04 | Low | 2004.324 includes a new option under "Utilities", "Thumbnail Manager" for deleting orphaned thumbnails: cached thumbnails that still exist but the associated images no longer exist due to being deleting with a program other than Qimage. v2004.324 also includes a cosmetic fix for the small "F" button on the preview page getting too close to the right edge of the pane in some cases when the page is turned to landscape orientation. |
| v2004.325 | 07/30/04 | Low | 2004.325 corrects an "index out of bounds" error that could occur when using the cropping tool in the page editor window with the editor window at a small size. This version also corrects a minor/cosmetic inconsistency in the size of the page displayed on the page editor window just after resizing the window. |
| v2004.326 | 08/01/04 | Med | 2004.326 includes the following:

Qimage Version 2004.200 News
Full IPTC support, interface improvements,
improved stability, and
many new features round out our 2004 edition, v2.0.
Qimage v2004.200 (05/14/04):
New Features:
Full IPTC support: Many of our users requested the ability to print IPTC captions with their images, so we added the ability to edit, view, print, and search a range of IPTC fields including title, author, caption, copyright, and more! In addition, you can use Qimage to manage your IPTC data since v2004.200 allows you to add IPTC data to JPEG and TIFF images, view the data, print it, and even do multi-folder searches for IPTC data using our IPTC data search facility. Looking for all images where you entered a keyword of "bird"? Just go to a folder, right click in the thumbnails, and select "Search IPTC Image Info". Qimage will search that folder and even include subfolders based on your search criteria and will show you the results by displaying both the image and the IPTC data right beside it. IPTC data is also carried over to saved/converted images when creating new images! Keep in mind that IPTC is a standard by which data fields can be embedded in JPEG and TIFF format images, so this option is not available for other image formats.... yet. :-)
Improved stability on all operating systems: v2004.200 has improved startup and operating stability due to more streamlined code.
Interface improvements: Minor changes to the main window interface allow more room for thumbnails and reduce clutter on the main window.
New/improved customer order sheets: Use the new order sheet option to print order sheets for customers and quickly/easily reload the order sheet later to select needed prints/sizes by print number! See example 7c in the help for more info.
Floating text features: Ability to display the print number next to each print and also the page number for each page.
EXIF hotbar improvement: If the EXIF Hotbar is enabled, Qimage will now display EXIF and other file information not only for thumbnails in the thumbnail grid, but also for prints in the queue or on the preview page. The thumbnail number/print number is also listed on the hotbar when "tracking" the mouse over entries in the thumbs or queue/preview respectively.
Flash card copy/move: Improved the "Flash Card Copy/Move" feature so that files are sorted prior to downloading, ensuring that auto-renaming results in the proper order.
Browse Selected Image's Folder: Ability to select an image already in the queue and go directly to the folder that contains that image to select more images from the same folder.
New Session w/Selected: Ability to select images in the queue or on the preview page and start a new session based on those images. This feature assists in creating print jobs based on selections from an order sheet. See example 7c in the help for more info.
Add Another Copy of this Image: Ability to select an image (or images) in the queue or on the preview page and duplicate those images so that another copy of each selected image is added to the queue.
Fixes:
Order sheets: Fixed a problem that was causing order sheets to crash if more than about 300 images were added to the queue.
Posters: Fixed a problem that was causing the wrong number of pages to be generated in some cases when entering the number of pages to print in a poster.
Mirror/blemish: Fixed the blemish tool so that it works properly when the "mirror" filter is used.

Qimage Version 2004.130 News
New advanced interpolation method plus
print engine overhaul
Qimage v2004.130 (02/13/04):
New Features:
"Pyramid" interpolation method: A new interpolation method called "pyramid" is available that produces even higher quality images than our vector method. The pyramid interpolation method is a bit slower than other interpolation methods but offers the smoothest edges, even when upsampling to many times the size of the original! Check out sample 1 and sample 2. We've posted an update to images used in a recent poll on the DPreview forums so that you can compare the new pyramid interpolation method with the preferred vector and Genuine Fractals methods as well.
Print engine update: Updated the Qimage print engine to overcome alignment problems with buggy print drivers; eliminates thin white lines that show on some printers that have drivers with "pixel registration" problems.
Interpolation filters: Made a small change to all interpolation methods so that images are no longer shifted one pixel up and to the left.

following:
|
| v2004.143 | 03/29/04 | Low | v2004.143 includes two new entries on the program "Help" menu: "Tutorial" and "PDF Manual". The first time you run the new version, you will be asked if you would like to see the quick tutorial which is intended to help new users get up to speed quickly in using the main window interface. Both the new tutorial and the PDF manual are now online resources that are not included with the Qimage install/download. This reduces download times and allows us to keep the documentation in separate locations on the web site while allowing them to still be accessible via the "Help" menu in Qimage. Other than the new tutorial and the fact that the PDF manual no longer installs with Qimage as part of the download, there are no other changes from v2004.142. |

"Small" and "Medium" correspond to the two sizes available in previous versions while the new "Large" size displays even bigger thumbnails than allowed in older versions. |
| v2004.146 | 04/06/04 | Low | v2004.146 contains the first installment of text capability upgrades, allowing multi-line text entries using the floating text tool. A single text label can now contain an entire multi-line paragraph, eliminating the need to enter and align separate text labels for each line of text. v2004.146 also fixes a bug that was causing inaccurate display of image crops when a cutout (frame) was used in conjunction with a crop placed on the image via the batch filter. |
| v2004.147 | 04/09/04 | Med | v2004.147 fixes a bug that was causing too much space between multiple lines of text on printed pages when using the floating text tool. v2004.147 also supports more variations of the BMP file format. |
| v2004.148 | 04/15/04 | Low | v2004.148 improves the "Flash card copy/move" feature so that flash cards from a greater variety of cameras are recognized. |
| v2004.149 | 04/16/04 | Low | v2004.149 adds the ability to click on "waiting for printer" message to override and manually send next page when spooler is set to "spool one page at a time". |
| v2004.150 | 04/17/04 | Med | v2004.150 corrects a positioning problem associated with floating text that is rotated. |
| v2004.151 | 04/26/04 | Med | v2004.151 corrects the
following two issues:

Qimage Version 2004.110 News
Print filters and selective color filter
make a powerful combination
Qimage v2004.110 (12/09/03):
New Features:
Selective color filter: Take control of every aspect of color in your images with the ability to apply color tweaks to specific areas of the color spectrum independently! Now you can correct those reds that look orange, blues that look too purple, or even remove a color cast from grays without affecting other (non-neutral) colors. Click here for details.
Print filters: Any filter that you design with Qimage's batch filter can now be associated with your printer! This powerful feature combined with the selective color filter allow you to take control of printed color like never before. Tired of having your images look great on screen only to print with a magenta color cast when you print on your favorite paper? You can now create an associative filter that eliminates that magenta color cast (and can fix nearly any issue related to printed color) and associate that filter with your printer. Just create your filter, save the filter, and activate it by checking "P.Filter" on the bottom right of the main window and all prints sent to the printer will pass through your filter as a last step! The new P.Filter selection is even saved with "Save Printer Setup" and "Load Printer Setup" so that you can place a filter on your printer and load that setup and filter at any time. Click here for details.
Help "jumps": Added the ability to jump to specific sections of the help file simply by entering a control and pressing F1. You can, for example, go into the batch filter, click the new "Sel. Color" tab, click in any of the edit boxes on that tab, and press F1 for help.
Updated PDF: Updated the PDF file, reduced its size, and added page numbers.
Fixes:
Page editor: Corrected a discrepancy between the PPI reported in the cropping tool and the PPI reported in the queue on the main window when working with a print with borders. Also fixed a problem where borders were getting applied more than once (creating the illusion of larger borders) on the page editor display under some conditions.
Sound: Corrected a problem where the "processing complete" sound was being heard at the end of each printed page instead of the end of the entire job when printing to file.
"Copy" command from queue: Fixed the "Copy" command (from right click in the queue) so that filter (.flt) files are copied with images in the queue that have filters.
Batch filter: Disabled the "Prev" and "Next" buttons while the current image is loading to prevent unnecessary "Save current filter" popups.
Thumbnail operations: Fixed an issue where Qimage was not allowing "rename", "copy", "move" and other operations from the thumbnail grid if an image with the same file name (but in a different folder) was already in the queue.
Version 2004.11x Revision History
| Version | Released | Priority | Description |
| v2004.111 | 12/10/03 | Low | v2004.111 improves display of file names in the thumbnail grid so that file names don't overlap when the text box is too small to hold the entire name and an associative filter is present. This version also has an improved install file that is smaller and runs without decompressing "extraneous" files during installation. |
| v2004.112 | 12/11/03 | Low | v2004.112 fixes an issue where the batch filter window was getting hidden behind the main window after switching to/from other open applications. This version also adds the ability to specify the desired printer ICC profile in print filters. If a particular print filter was designed based on images in sRGB color space for example, you can set the "ICC" parameter in your print filter to sRGB.icm, specifying that data should be in sRGB color space before passing through the print filter. This allows print filters to be used effectively with images in any color space by prompting the user to select the proper color space for "Prtr ICC" before using the print filter. |
| v2004.113 | 12/15/03 | Low | v2004.113 includes the
following:
|
| v2004.114 | 12/17/03 | Low | v2004.114 includes the
following:
|
| v2004.115 | 12/17/03 | Low | v2004.115 fixes a problem that was allowing images to be auto-rotated when dropped on templates even if the image lock (lock button) was down. |
| v2004.116 | 12/18/03 | Low | v2004.116 contains a slight change to "optimal" and "optimal/spaced" placement methods that results in more prints per page under some conditions. |
| v2004.117 | 12/18/03 | Med | v2004.117 includes the
following:

| v2004.118 | 12/23/03 | Med | v2004.118 includes the
following:
|
| v2004.119 | 12/30/03 | Low | v2004.119 includes a "sharpness
equalizer" that can be used with the unsharp mask
filter to add more "presence" or "3D
effect" to images. The new sharpness equalizer can
be used with the unsharp mask filter to reverse uneven
sharpness caused by single color (Bayer) image sensors.
Since most image sensors capture neutral (gray) detail
with much higher resolution than color detail such as red,
green, and blue, objects of differing colors can often
appear to have different focus even when they are in the
same focal plane (same distance from the lens). This
apparent inconsistency in depth of field can remove some
of the perceived "depth" in an image and ruin
the three dimensional feeling of photos. Using liberal
amounts of unsharp mask combined with the sharpness
equalizer will sharpen color details more (based on
layout of the pixels on a Bayer sensor), while leaving
the already-sharp gray details alone, bringing overall
sharpness back to a consistent level. Here are some
samples with unsharp mask radius at 3, strength at 200,
and sharpness equalizer at "Max": Sample 1: Notice that in the original, the gray pelican and the water appear to have acceptable sharpness while the brighter colored flamingos appear blurred. The blurring is caused by the image sensor not having as many photo detectors recording information for that particular color. The grass in the background, while better than the flamingos, is also a little blurrier than the grays in the image. In the filtered photo on the right, the unsharp mask filter combined with the sharpness equalizer has brought the sharpness to a consistent level across the image. This consistency in sharpness makes the image look more "real". Sample 2: Here is another example where sharpness has been "equalized" so that grays have the same apparent sharpness as areas with more color, such as skin tones. |
| v2004.120 | 01/06/04 | Low | v2004.120 improves the "Edges" option so that hairline borders now print as a white/black dashed outline for better visibility. Internal print size calculations have also been changed slightly to improve rounding of "odd" sizes: a purely cosmetic change that will not visibly affect prints. |
| v2004.121 | 01/07/04 | Low | v2004.121 adds the ability to specify the type of edge when the "Edges" option is used to mark the edges of prints. This version also eliminates error messages that occurred in previous versions when using Qimage to print to file with no Windows printers installed. |
| v2004.122 | 01/09/04 | Low | v2004.122 includes a high precision print cropping tool available by clicking the magnifying glass on the print cropping tab in the page editor. This version also fixes a bug that was causing the default auto-crop to not show when clicking "Crop" in the batch filter if other filters were activated first. |
| v2004.123 | 01/09/04 | Low | v2004.123 fixes an issue with the new high precision crop tool showing an incorrect print crop when the image itself also has an associated crop. |
| v2004.124 | 01/12/04 | Low | v2004.124 improves the "Exposure" filter by making the previewed image match the full-filtered image in the batch filter. In addition, the exposure filter is now based on the cropped portion of the image when a crop is present. |
| v2004.125 | 01/13/04 | Low | v2004.125 includes the
following:
|
| v2004.126 | 01/14/04 | Low | v2004.126 eliminates delays and screen "gyrations" on the main window when exiting the batch filter with a large number of photos in the queue. This version also corrects a problem that was causing the date+ and date- thumbnail sorts to run very slowly. |
| v2004.127 | 01/14/04 | Low | v2004.127 fixes a bug that was causing v2004.126 to not honor changes to the auto-crop setting on existing prints. |
| v2004.128 | 01/15/04 | Low | v2004.128 includes the
following:
|
| v2004.129 | 01/21/04 | Low | v2004.129 fixes an "access violation" error related to cropping a portrait image that has been auto-rotated by a camera while also using the "exposure" filter. |
Qimage Version 2004.100 News
More flexibile and easier to use
Qimage v2004.100 (11/21/03):
New Features:
Print cropping: v2004.100 offers the ability to crop each individual print without the need to crop images. This is a major shift in the way Qimage handles cropping in that you are no longer required to crop the image when crop adjustments are required for different print sizes. In addition, print cropping allows you to print several different crops from the same image without using filters or resaving images! The new cropping tool located on the page editor window allows you to drag the cropped area within a crop window, zoom in, rotate the crop window to get portrait/landscape crops, apply your crop to other copies of the same image automatically, and more. See example 3a in the help for full details on how to use the new print cropping tool.
Batch filter auto-crop: Since print cropping is now done via the page editor, opening an image in the queue with the batch filter will no longer result in a crop being placed on the image simply because you have selected a print that has the auto-crop turned on. This eliminates the possibility of crops being inadvertently added to images due to the crop button being depressed.
Aspect ratio helper: Qimage now highlights the most compatible print size(s) when thumbnails are selected so that you will know which of the standard sizes most closely matches the proportions of the image(s) that are selected. Simply select thumbnail(s) and the most compatible print size button(s) (based on image proportions/aspect ratio) are highlighted. See example 2a in the help for more info.
Higher quality thumbnails: Thumbnails are now stored at more than three times the resolution, resulting in better page previews and more control when using the page editor.
Batch filter window upgrade: The batch filter window has been reformatted and resized to make filter controls much easier to use and giving much more control when using filters like levels and curves.
Speedier operations: Improved the speed of operations such as thumbnail loading and redraw speed on preview pages.
Info stamp: Improved the info stamp display so that the info stamp shows inside the crop area when using the batch filter.
Slide show: Improved the full screen slide show with the ability to move forward/backward using Page Up/Page Down keys and also improved the slide show display so that the previous image is always displayed until the next image is ready, eliminating screen "blank outs" between photos.
Folder history: Improved the folder history dropdown so that the most recently visited folders are always at the top, ensuring that important folders do not "roll off" the list.
Sound: Added the Windows "Asterisk" sound to operations that can potentially take more time to run such as printing, converting from the queue, copying files, etc. so that a sound is heard when the operation is complete.
Page editor quick access: Added the ability to double click on empty space on the preview page (or the space just outside the page area) to enter the page editor. Now you can double click on images on the preview page to enter the batch filter to edit those images or double click on "white space" on the page to edit the page layout itself.
Batch filter quick access from page editor: When using the full page editor, you may now double click on any image on the page to edit that image using the batch filter (same as double clicking the image on the small preview page).
Margins: Qimage now offers the ability to enter either absolute or relative page margins, making selection of margins much simpler. See the help under margins for more info.
Original size: Improved the "original size" option so that embedded DPI is recognized for more file types.
New help examples: Added examples to the Learn by Example section of the help to assist with common workflows such as borderless printing.
Fixes:
Show file-types bug: Corrected a bug that caused JPEG and TIFF files to not display properly in the thumbnail grid when both JPEG and TIFF files with the same name existed in the same folder.
Thumbnail grid: Fixed a problem that caused the red file name "filtered image" indicator to disappear after clicking "Convert" from the queue and then "Cancel".
Templates/dragging: Fixed a bug that resulted in the inability to drop multiple images onto templates and have those images fill the appropriate templates.
Image info and text annotation bug: Fixed a problem that was causing prints to be distorted under some conditions when using the "Img. Info" or "Text Annotation" features.
Batch filter: Fixed some issues that were causing the batch filter to prompt you to save a filter when no filter was in place or after deleting an image from the batch filter window.
