Letting the driver manage color
Qimage v2006.270 (04/28/06):
In a significant breakthrough in color management control, Qimage can now communicate with your printer driver to determine the best way to manage color when paper-specific ICC profiles are not being used. The new "let printer/driver manage colors" option is designed to make life easier for people who do not wish to manage color on their own using custom ICC profiles. While Qimage still offers total control and ability to color manage via use of custom profiles, the new "let printer/driver manage colors" option allows better color accuracy and control for those who do not wish to manually color manage their photos, thereby improving "out of the box" performance and virtually eliminating issues such as "double profiling" caused by improper color management.
New Features:
- Letting the printer/driver manage color: If you have your own printer ICC profiles for specific papers, continue to use them and allow Qimage to manage color as this is the most accurate way to manage color. If, however, you do not have paper-specific profiles or you are uncertain as to how to apply manufacturer supplied profiles, simply click "Edit", "Preferences", "Color Management", check the "Enabled" box under "Printer" and then click the "Let printer/driver manage colors" button. This option uses two way communication with your print driver to automatically determine how to manage color. While letting the printer/driver manage color is not the preferred method for managing color, it offers a way to manage color to those who are not ready or do not have the ability to acquire custom paper-specific profiles for their printer(s). See the help on color management for more details.
- Soft proofing: Improved the "soft proof" feature so that black point compensation can be previewed when print-by-print color management information is present.
- Thumbnails: Ability to control the appearance of the thumbnail slates (textured versus plain). Use "View", "Interface Options", "Thumbnail Slates" to change the view.
- Windows monitor/printer profile identification: When using the ICC profile selection dialog, the Windows monitor and printer profile associations are highlighted in light yellow/green, helping users identify which profiles are currently associated with the monitor and printer via Windows.
Fixes:
- Fixed a bug that was causing prints to turn into posters when dragging the print size on the preview page beyond the limits of the page.
- Fixed a problem that was causing the print borders to not show/update properly in the full page editor when only one print was present on the page.
- Improved the IPTC reader so that corrupted IPTC fields don't cause error messages/lockups.

Print-by-print color management control
Qimage v2006.260 (04/19/06):
Qimage has always been about freedom: freedom to optimize and control every aspect of your photographic printing. Now you can customize color management settings on a print-by-print basis, allowing total control over profile, rendering intent, and black point compensation for each print on the page! Need to use relative colorimetric intent for some of your prints while using perceptual intent for others? Need to test two different profiles using two prints on one page to see which works best? These tasks are no problem with Qimage v2006.260!
New Features:
- Print-by-print color management: Simply select print(s) on the preview page and then right click and select "Custom Color Mgmt Settings". You can then select "Custom" and change the profile, rendering intent, or black point compensation for the selected print(s).
Fixes:
- Fixed a bug in the Recall/Save dialog where it was not possible to select the first file on the list when in the save mode. Also fixed a cutout-frame display problem when displaying cutout frames on the preview page and full page editor.

Qimage Version 2006.250 News
Added features and performance
Qimage v2006.250 (03/21/06):
Digital Domain Inc. has just released Qimage v2006.250. This latest release of our professional Windows photographic printing software offers better quality and control over the non-photographic objects in your print job such as borders, page background color, and floating text. All of these objects are now color managed just like your photographs so there will be no more surprises or unexpected color when printing borders, text, or page backgrounds with a printer ICC profile enabled. You'll enjoy the ability to create photo mats using the new double borders and will sail through your project with the new border dropper for picking just the right color to match your borders to your photos! Other cosmetic changes have been made in specific areas to make your photographic printing job even easier and we've even thrown in a performance improvement to increase print quality when doing extreme enlargements (printing very large prints from low resolution photos).
New Features:
- Double borders: Ability to specify two separate border sizes/colors for creation of photo mats and other effects.
- Border sizing: The photo itself can now be sized independently from the borders (use the "Custom" size button and "Specific Size" for this option).
- Border dropper: Use the "Pick with Dropper" option when changing border color to pick a color from the thumbnails or preview page.
- Color management: All non-photographic objects are now color managed such as the border colors, page background, and even floating text and shadows.
- Print quality: A small change to the "pyramid" interpolation method improves print quality when doing extreme enlargements (large prints from low resolution photos).
- Cosmetic changes: Cosmetic improvements include a new splash screen, new "Help", "About" window, and updated print interpolation window.
Fixes:
- Fixed some minor bugs including a page editor bug that caused an "index out of bounds" error and a size/rotate bug related to template positioning.

Qimage Version 2006.200 News
Qimage forges ahead with innovative new features
Qimage v2006.200 (11/10/05):
Digital Domain Inc. is proud to announce Qimage v2006.200. Our latest version paves new roads for photographic printing with features that make batch printing and processing easier than ever before. With this latest version, you'll immediately be able to put these innovative new features to use. There's something for everyone in this important upgrade whether you use Qimage to print and send snapshots to friends and family or you use Qimage professionally for your photography business. You'll be able to use the "Instaview" feature to instantly preview thumbnails from the new 3D thumbnail grid, preview prints on the preview page, or even preview file names listed in the queue. Professional photographers will appreciate the new "Print Proofs" feature that allows printing of watermarked photos for client review. Everyone will appreciate the new simplified "Send via E-mail" command: just select a few thumbnails, right click and select "Send via E-mail", and choose a size/resolution. We've even enhanced legacy features like cutouts so that it is possible to fade to any color, allowing more robust photo effects that add a professional edge to your photos. Be sure to check the full list of features and fixes.
New Features:
3D thumbnail grid: A more robust look and feel is immediately evident as you use the new thumbnail browser. The new granite textured slates and shadow effects add depth and take the monotony out of searching for photos.
Instaview: Ever been searching through a batch of thumbnails and find yourself squinting or moving closer to your monitor in order to determine which shot shows everyone in a group photo with their eyes open? Have you ever wanted to just point to a file in the queue and get an instant preview? The new Instaview feature allows you to simply press and hold your middle mouse button, mouse scroll wheel, or enter key to get an instant (larger) preview. Since the preview is nearly instantaneous, you may find yourself using this feature even more than the existing "spacebar to view full screen" function.
Send via E-mail: The "Send via E-mail" function from the thumbnail grid has been improved and simplified so that you can simply select thumbnails and pick a resolution to send e-mail copies to friends/family.
{Q-E} e-mail prefix: Qimage no longer adds the {Q-E} file prefix when creating e-mail/web copies. Instead, a scratch "{Q}e-mail" folder will be created under the current folder to store the (resulting) images.
Print Proofs: You can now use the "File", "Print Proofs" feature to print watermarked proofs that allow clients to review photos without giving them a way to duplicate them.
Cutouts: While older versions would only allow fading to white using shades of gray for transparency, v2006.200 offers a simple way to choose the "fade to" color so that you can fade to black, red, green, orange, or any color you like.
Folder browser: The folder browser has been improved so that the current folder displays in the middle of the window as opposed to the bottom so that you need to do less scrolling to find your folders.
Copy: The "Copy Images" function from the thumbnail grid has been improved so that you can simply type a file name to create a copy of an image with a different name in the same folder.
Fixes:
IPTC: Corrected a problem that was causing IPTC data to not display/edit properly for IPTC fields added by IrfanView or Picasa.
Layouts: Fixed a problem that was causing layouts with mixed templates and "real" images to not fill properly when adding more than one thumbnail at a time.
X64: Fixed a problem related to Windows X64 not displaying the Windows color folder properly when selecting ICC profiles.
Print rotation: Corrected an issue that was causing square prints to not rotate properly under some conditions when using the rotate buttons.
Help/About/Download: Fixed a problem that was causing a crash after selecting "Help", "About", "Download" if both the primary and mirror downloads were canceled.
Flash Card Copy/Move: Corrected a problem with the auto-rename feature not using the proper date/time when certain types of raw images were downloaded.
Shutter Speed: Fixed the EXIF shutter speed parameter so that the proper shutter speed is displayed for raw images converted with Bibble.
Batch filter cropping: Fixed a problem that was allowing the crop to be dragged past the left/top edge when "crop lock" was checked.

To put this into perspective, this is about the size of 50 stitched photos from a 6 MP dSLR or a 4x5 negative scanned at about 4000 PPI. The ability to accept much larger originals allows Qimage to be more flexible when creating large prints. Proper system configuration is paramount for large format printing so be sure to check out Mike Chaney's large format printing article at Steve's Digicams for everything you need to know about printing large! |
| v2006.214 | 01/27/06 | Low | v2006.214 corrects an issue where v2006.213 could become unresponsive when overwriting existing files using the recall/save dialog due to an "Overwrite y/n" dialog appearing behind the recall/save dialog and therefore not being visible to the user. |

This version also adds a "Return to print-to-printer mode" button to the print-to-file page setup dialog to allow users to quickly switch back to a printer without going to the main menu. |
| v2006.208 | 12/07/05 | Low |
v2006.208 includes the
following:
|
| v2006.207 | 12/02/05 | Low | v2006.207 corrects a problem where info/annotation text printed on a black background when using the new "Crop Marks" or "Guide Lines" features. This version also adds one new edge option to mark corners using the border color and one new predefined filter for negative images. Also note that a new PDF manual is available based on the latest version. |
| v2006.206 | 11/30/05 | Low | v2006.206 adds two new selections to the "Edges" option: crop marks and guide lines. See the help for "Edges" for details. | v2006.203 | 11/16/05 | Low | v2006.203 corrects an anomaly in the pyramid interpolation routine that was causing "sawtooth" patterns around the edges of rectangles in very rare cases. This version also adds the metric/English selection to printer setup files so that page size is properly recalled when print-to-file is being used. |
| v2006.202 | 11/12/05 | Med | v2006.202 fixes a problem that was causing a crash/lockup when starting Qimage on some systems. This version also corrects an issue that was causing the page background color to only appear on the first printed page (all subsequent pages had the default white background). |
| v2006.201 | 11/11/05 | High | v2006.201 uses a less distracting texture for thumbnail slates and also improves thumbnail refresh/scroll speed dramatically. Also fixed is a problem that was causing files to be deleted from the "Output folder" when using "Create E-mail/Web Copies". Qimage Version 2006.120 News
Job based printing is a new way to manage what you print
Qimage v2006.120 (09/24/05):
New Features:
Job based printing: Qimage now offers a new way to manage what you print. Each time the print function is used in Qimage, information about the job is logged in the Qimage "Log" folder. By default, Qimage will keep the last 100 jobs printed. Simply click "File", "Open Automated Job Log" and click on a job to display details about the job. Jobs in the log are listed in date order with the most recent jobs at the top of the list. Jobs may be recalled in their entirety including all program/printer settings and also all images that were in the queue when the job was printed. If you are working on a set of images and would like to save the job (without printing it), you may click "File", "Save", select "Job" at the bottom of the save dialog, supply a file name, and click "Save". Use "File", "Recall" to recall the job at a later time.
New recall/save feature: "Recall" and "Save" tool buttons replace the four load/save buttons with the "P" and "S" icons from previous versions. The new recall/save feature offers a more robust and more standard way to save things such as Qimage settings, sessions, layouts, jobs, and printer setups.
Main menu: Moved page related items from the "Edit", "Preferences", "Page Formatting" menu to a "Page Formatting" top level menu for easier access.

New features and some user interface improvements
Qimage v2006.110 (09/16/05):
New Features:
New "Size" and "Job Options" tabs: For a cleaner look and to allow for a larger preview page on lower resolution displays, the legacy "Prints" and "Print Processing" panels have been combined onto a single panel with "Size" and "Job Options" tabs. Since both panels were visible in previous versions, the two new tabs switch automatically depending on the operation being performed so that the information you need is visible when you need it.
Double sided printing: We find that more and more coated/professional papers are being developed for printing on both sides of the paper. If you need to print on both sides of the paper, click "Edit", "Preferences", "Collate Pages", and check "Prompt for Odd/Even Pages". With this option checked, Qimage will ask for "Odd", "Even", or "All" pages each time you print to your printer (does not apply to printing to file).
Queue auto clearing: Click "Edit", "Preferences", "General", "Clear Queue Automatically" to select whether or not the queue is cleared after each (complete) print job.
Optional text labels for size buttons: You can now name your size buttons with names such as "Wallet", "Passport", "A4", etc. Right click on a size button on the "Size" tab to define your own size and/or enter an optional text label for the button. You will not be able to enter text that is too long to fit on the size button.
Layouts: Added a prompt for "Would you like to continue working with this layout" when a layout (page set) is being used and the "Clear Queue" function is selected. This option allows you to work with images in a layout, clear the queue, and continue working in the same layout with new images.
Fixes:
Folder history: Fixed a bug in the folder history dropdown that was causing thumbnails to not load completely after visiting the root folder (C:\ for example) of a disk drive.
Full edit: Corrected a problem with images loading too slowly when using the "Create Associative Filter", "Full Edit" function.
Batch filter: Fixed a display anomaly that caused the crop box to appear in the wrong place after double clicking on an image on the page editor window.
Orphaned thumbs function: Improved the "Delete orphaned thumbs" function so that the "Insert Disk" message is not displayed when a thumbnail points to a disk drive that is not ready.
Qimage Version 2006.100 News
Two 2006 editions released together!
Qimage v2006.100 (08/20/05):
The 2006 edition of Qimage is being released to coincide with our new 2006 Qimage Lite edition! For those who have not been updating Qimage regularly over the past 2-3 weeks, we've fixed a number of minor bugs, added some useful features, and sped up certain operations, making the 2006 edition the best Qimage yet. If you have been following the most recent updates, the 2006 edition brings a new splash screen that remains visible longer but can be closed instantly by just a click of the mouse, plus a few minor fixes since the last 2005 version (v2005.335).
Introducing Qimage Lite!
Yes, there are now two versions of Qimage: Qimage and Qimage Lite. Your "regular" version of Qimage, dubbed "Qheavy" by some of our Qlite beta testers, will remain the most powerful PC photo printing tool on the planet and will still benefit from frequent updates due to user suggestions and changes in technology. Where Qimage is tailored to the high volume, professional or advanced amateur, Qimage Lite is designed to better serve those who want all the quality and most of the power of Qimage without getting lost in more "high end" features that may never be used. Qimage Lite has a leaner and more intuitive interface while still being true to the concept that makes Qimage an efficient printing tool. If you are a casual shooter, only print photos occasionally, want a fast learning curve, but still want the highest possible print quality, Qimage Lite may be the right edition for you.
Qimage and Qimage Lite are completely separate products and both will be updated regularly and thoroughly supported. Our price points have changed with Qimage going up slightly to $49.95 and Qimage Lite coming in quite a bit cheaper at $34.95. Please refer to our comparison table, however, since Qimage offers free lifetime upgrades while Qimage Lite costs $10 per major revision (roughly $10 per year).
