Qimage Version 2006.270 News
Letting the driver manage color

Qimage v2006.270 (04/28/06):

In a significant breakthrough in color management control, Qimage can now communicate with your printer driver to determine the best way to manage color when paper-specific ICC profiles are not being used.  The new "let printer/driver manage colors" option is designed to make life easier for people who do not wish to manage color on their own using custom ICC profiles.  While Qimage still offers total control and ability to color manage via use of custom profiles, the new "let printer/driver manage colors" option allows better color accuracy and control for those who do not wish to manually color manage their photos, thereby improving "out of the box" performance and virtually eliminating issues such as "double profiling" caused by improper color management.

Print-by-print color management control

Qimage v2006.260 (04/19/06):

Qimage has always been about freedom: freedom to optimize and control every aspect of your photographic printing.  Now you can customize color management settings on a print-by-print basis, allowing total control over profile, rendering intent, and black point compensation for each print on the page!  Need to use relative colorimetric intent for some of your prints while using perceptual intent for others?  Need to test two different profiles using two prints on one page to see which works best?  These tasks are no problem with Qimage v2006.260!

Added features and performance

Qimage v2006.250 (03/21/06):

Digital Domain Inc. has just released Qimage v2006.250.  This latest release of our professional Windows photographic printing software offers better quality and control over the non-photographic objects in your print job such as borders, page background color, and floating text.  All of these objects are now color managed just like your photographs so there will be no more surprises or unexpected color when printing borders, text, or page backgrounds with a printer ICC profile enabled.  You'll enjoy the ability to create photo mats using the new double borders and will sail through your project with the new border dropper for picking just the right color to match your borders to your photos!  Other cosmetic changes have been made in specific areas to make your photographic printing job even easier and we've even thrown in a performance improvement to increase print quality when doing extreme enlargements (printing very large prints from low resolution photos).

Version Released Priority Description
v2006.258 04/14/06 Low v2006.258 no longer uses diagonal lines over the print to indicate which prints are selected on the preview page, making viewing previews and selecting colors easier.  This version also fixes a number of anomalies related to changing border parameters from the full page editor and/or main window.

v2006.20x Revision History

Version Released Priority Description
v2006.220 03/02/06 Low v2006.220 fixes a bug where the file selection grid jumped up/down unexpectedly at times when using the "names only" display mode.
v2006.219 03/01/06 Low v2006.219 prevents errors/crashes when trying to build thumbs for RLE compressed TGA files.  This version also adds better range/error checking to prevent problems caused by corrupted INI files.
v2006.218 02/15/06 High v2006.218 is a high priority upgrade if you are running v2006.217 as it corrects error messages during printing and other operations and fixes a problem with saving/recalling settings in v2006.217.  This version also restores the ability to type-search one letter at a time after opening the "Save/Recall" dialog.
v2006.217 02/13/06 Low v2006.217 includes the following:
  • The "Browse for an output folder" button on the convert images dialog now defaults to the current folder to simplify folder selection.
  • The preview/add function, accessed via the "P+" button above the thumbnails, can now be dragged/maximized to enlarge the previewed image(s).
  • When saving layouts, overall image placement is now automatically changed to "Freehand" when all pages are individually marked freehand, avoiding unexpected results when creating layouts in an automatic placement mode (like optimal) and then moving templates on individual pages.
v2006.216 02/08/06 Med v2006.216 offers a new high visibility blue-on-white print progress bar.  This version also fixes an "access violation" error that could appear under certain [rare] conditions when printing.
v2006.215 02/07/06 Low v2006.215 includes an improved memory manager that allows viewing/printing of very large TIFF files up to about .9 GB (900MB) in size.  To put this into perspective, this is about the size of 50 stitched photos from a 6 MP dSLR or a 4x5 negative scanned at about 4000 PPI.  The ability to accept much larger originals allows Qimage to be more flexible when creating large prints.  Proper system configuration is paramount for large format printing so be sure to check out Mike Chaney's large format printing article at Steve's Digicams for everything you need to know about printing large!
v2006.214 01/27/06 Low v2006.214 corrects an issue where v2006.213 could become unresponsive when overwriting existing files using the recall/save dialog due to an "Overwrite y/n" dialog appearing behind the recall/save dialog and therefore not being visible to the user.
v2006.213 01/27/06 Low v2006.213 offers the ability to customize the window size, location, and browser/details split on the recall dialog.
v2006.212 01/26/06 Low v2006.212 adds support for TIFF files with ZIP and JPEG compression.

v2006.209 01/10/06 Low v2006.209 fixes the cancel button on the print-to-file dialog so that printing to file can be canceled when needed.  This version also adds a "Return to print-to-printer mode" button to the print-to-file page setup dialog to allow users to quickly switch back to a printer without going to the main menu.
v2006.208 12/07/05 Low v2006.208 includes the following:
  • IPTC data now carries from originals to e-mail/web copies.
  • Added the ability to mix layouts by loading multiple layouts in a one-layout-per-page fashion.
  • Fixed the "border" function so that the border size is updated on the preview page as soon as a new border size is typed.
  • Fixed some batch filter cropping issues: inability to slide full length/width crops and "crop lock" not working when dragging past the left/top edge.
  • Added page numbers to the PDF manual.
v2006.207 12/02/05 Low v2006.207 corrects a problem where info/annotation text printed on a black background when using the new "Crop Marks" or "Guide Lines" features.  This version also adds one new edge option to mark corners using the border color and one new predefined filter for negative images.  Also note that a new PDF manual is available based on the latest version.
v2006.206 11/30/05 Low v2006.206 adds two new selections to the "Edges" option: crop marks and guide lines.  See the help for "Edges" for details.  This version also fixes a batch filter cropping anomaly  where the "crop lock" feature was not working properly when moving (dragging) an existing crop.
v2006.205 11/18/05 Med v2006.205 fixes the automated job log so that the log is saved properly when "Clear Queue Automatically" is turned on.  This version also corrects the auto-rename feature so that image filters follow the renamed files properly.
v2006.204 11/17/05 Low v2006.204 improves display of EXIF information such as shutter speed and aperture from different file formats.
v2006.203 11/16/05 Low v2006.203 corrects an anomaly in the pyramid interpolation routine that was causing "sawtooth" patterns around the edges of rectangles in very rare cases.  This version also adds the metric/English selection to printer setup files so that page size is properly recalled when print-to-file is being used.
v2006.202 11/12/05 Med v2006.202 fixes a problem that was causing a crash/lockup when starting Qimage on some systems.  This version also corrects an issue that was causing the page background color to only appear on the first printed page (all subsequent pages had the default white background).
v2006.201 11/11/05 High v2006.201 uses a less distracting texture for thumbnail slates and also improves thumbnail refresh/scroll speed dramatically.  Also fixed is a problem that was causing files to be deleted from the "Output folder" when using "Create E-mail/Web Copies".  Finally, a minor change was made to layouts so that only the templates are filled when the layout contains an odd mix of templates and existing images.

Qimage Version 2006.120 News
Job based printing is a new way to manage what you print

Qimage v2006.120 (09/24/05):

New Features:

v2006.12x Revision History

Version Released Priority Description
v2006.121 09/25/05 Low v2006.121 includes some minor cosmetic changes to the recall/save dialog.  Also included are two fixes: one to eliminate an error message when clearing the queue while using a layout and also a fix that allows rotation of templates (in all but optimal and optimal/spaced placement modes).
v2006.122 09/26/05 Low v2006.122 includes some final refinements to the recall/save dialog and the job log:
  • Job log sorting:  The job log is now sorted so that the most recent jobs are at the top.
  • Start and exit jobs: Two new automated jobs called "{Q} Last Start" and "{Q} Last Exit" have been added to the job log.  These jobs allow restoration of settings as they appeared when Qimage was last started or last exited.
  • Print to file: Corrected an issue where print-to-file produced a separate job in the log for each page instead of one job containing all pages.
v2006.123 09/27/05 Med v2006.123 includes the following:
  • Loading via command line: A job, printer setup, session, layout, or option settings can now be loaded automatically by specifying the file to load on the command line when Qimage is started.  Example: "c:\program files\qimage\qimage.exe c:\program files\qimage\save\startjob.job" will start Qimage with the "startjob.job" file loaded.
  • Loading sessions: Restored the "New", "Append", "Cancel" dialog when opening a session with images in the queue.
  • Undo: Improved the "Edit", "Undo" function on the main window so that the "Undo" command goes back to more logical places.
  • Recall/save dialog: Improved the sorting in the recall/save dialog so that uppercase file names are not sorted separately from lower-case file names.
  • Recall/save dialog: Eliminated window scroll bars on systems that are running a large "active window border" in display appearance properties.
  • E-mail/web copies: Fixed a bug that was causing images to not be converted properly to sRGB color space when "... use sRGB color space" was selected in the "Create e-mail/web copies" dialog.
  • Stability: Improved stability by fixing a range error that was causing occasional memory overruns when opening images with embedded profiles.
v2006.124 09/29/05 Low v2006.124 fixes a bug that was causing posters to occasionally be one column/row larger than specified when using the "poster" sizing feature from the "Custom" sizing button.  This version also fixes a problem where cutout frames would print in a different orientation than that displayed on the page preview in Qimage if the image in question had both a cutout frame and a rotation specified in the same filter.
v2006.125 10/03/05 Low v2006.125 includes the following:
  • Recall/save dialog: Added the ability to rename files in the recall/save dialog by highlighting a file and then right clicking and selecting "Rename".
  • Printer targets: Added a "{Q} printer target setup" job to the list of saved jobs.  Simply click "Recall", highlight the "{Q} printer target setup" job, and click "Open" to recall the recommended settings for printing color targets for the purpose of custom profiling.
  • Fixed a problem that was causing a slow repeating loop when selecting multiple prints and changing border size.
  • Eliminated a message regarding "saved sessions in the Qimage folder" when using "Help", "Analyze current settings".
  • Corrected an issue that was causing settings such as page orientation to revert to prior settings when clicking the "Custom" size button repeatedly.
v2006.126 10/04/05 Low v2006.126 includes the following minor fixes:
  • Send to: Corrected the "Send To" feature so that Qimage would accept an image sent from another application when only one image is being sent.
  • Page editor: Fixed a bug where full page editor was showing images without the monitor profile when using "Selected Image" as the "View".
  • Recall/save dialog: Corrected a problem that was causing files such as printer setups to not show on the list if a job with the same name existed.
v2006.127 10/08/05 Low v2006.127 fixes a bug in odd/even page printing where pages with page-linked floating text would sometimes print out of sequence and with the text only (with no prints on the page).
v2006.128 10/10/05 Low v2006.128 includes improvements to the recall/save dialog such as a file date/time column, ability to click on column headers to sort, and ability to utilize the entire window when enlarging/maximizing.  This version also fixes a bug that was preventing Qimage from closing after entering and quickly exiting the batch filter.
v2006.129 10/26/05 Low v2006.129 includes the following:
  • Improved TIFF support to eliminate error messages caused by corrupted headers found in some 48 bit TIFF images saved via PSP 10.
  • Corrected the location of the "In queue" checkbox in the batch filter and slide show windows.
  • Made a correction to the "Custom" size dialog so that templates don't disappear from the queue when creating layouts with the "specific size" option.

Qimage Version 2006.100 News
Two 2006 editions released together!

Qimage v2006.100 (08/20/05):

The 2006 edition of Qimage is being released to coincide with our new 2006 Qimage Lite edition!  For those who have not been updating Qimage regularly over the past 2-3 weeks, we've fixed a number of minor bugs, added some useful features, and sped up certain operations, making the 2006 edition the best Qimage yet.  If you have been following the most recent updates, the 2006 edition brings a new splash screen that remains visible longer but can be closed instantly by just a click of the mouse, plus a few minor fixes since the last 2005 version (v2005.335).

Introducing Qimage Lite!

Yes, there are now two versions of Qimage: Qimage and Qimage Lite.  Your "regular" version of Qimage, dubbed "Qheavy" by some of our Qlite beta testers, will remain the most powerful PC photo printing tool on the planet and will still benefit from frequent updates due to user suggestions and changes in technology.  Where Qimage is tailored to the high volume, professional or advanced amateur, Qimage Lite is designed to better serve those who want all the quality and most of the power of Qimage without getting lost in more "high end" features that may never be used.  Qimage Lite has a leaner and more intuitive interface while still being true to the concept that makes Qimage an efficient printing tool.  If you are a casual shooter, only print photos occasionally, want a fast learning curve, but still want the highest possible print quality, Qimage Lite may be the right edition for you.

Qimage and Qimage Lite are completely separate products and both will be updated regularly and thoroughly supported.  Our price points have changed with Qimage going up slightly to $49.95 and Qimage Lite coming in quite a bit cheaper at $34.95.  Please refer to our comparison table, however, since Qimage offers free lifetime upgrades while Qimage Lite costs $10 per major revision (roughly $10 per year).
