The new Canon S100 Digital Elph is popular for it's size and ergonomics and produces pleasing images right out of the box. Like many consumer cameras, however, it does produce images that have oversaturated colors in some areas. We found that the S100 produced slightly oversaturated greens (a common thing for consumer cameras) and also a small tendency to oversaturate orange and blue colors. This can be seen in the GretagMacbeth color checker chart above, most notably in the bottom row where the green patch and both blue patches are oversaturated and/or too bright in the original. In addition, it produced warmer (redder) skin tones that, while pleasing to the eye, were not as accurate as they could be. As you can see from the samples above, the most drastic change is the change to shades of red. Although the originals have a lot of "pop", they also tend to "erase" some detail (notice how oversaturation has masked reflections in the door of the red car in the original, and how these reflections are visible on the profiled image). In skin tones, the profiling can often reduce the extra reddish hue present in images.
